NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover Spots Unusual Hollowed-Out Rock Using Mastcam-Z
NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover captured an unusual hollowed-out rock in Jezero Crater using its Mastcam-Z on June 26, 2023, which is the 836th Martian day (sol) of its mission. Researchers believe this shape was caused by wind sandblasting the rock surfaces over millions of years.
Mastcam-Z, developed in collaboration with Arizona State University, was designed to take HD video, panoramic color and 3D images of the Martian surface using a zoom lens to magnify distant targets. Weighing in at 8.8-pounds (4.4-kilograms), it’s located on the rover mast at the eye level of a 6.5-foot-tall person (2-meters), separated by 9.5-inches (24.2 centimeters) for stereo vision.

Subsequent NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis. The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet,” said the agency.
